GPT Workspace Launches a Free Invoice Generator for Google Workspace Users
On this page

Every freelancer, consultant and small business owner knows the moment. The work is done, the client is happy, and now you need an invoice. You open last month’s Google Doc, change the date, bump the number by hand, retype the line items, recalculate the tax and export a PDF, hoping the old client’s name is not still in the footer. And the “free invoice generator” you find on Google wants an account, stamps a watermark on the PDF, or uploads your client’s details to a server you have never heard of.

Today GPT Workspace, our AI assistant for Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Gmail, releases a free invoice generator at gpt.space/tools/invoice-generator. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, adds no watermark, and has an AI mode that turns one sentence about the job into a finished invoice. This article covers why we built it, what it does, how the AI mode works, who it is for, and how it connects to the Google Docs and Sheets work that comes after the invoice is sent.

Why an Invoice Generator, and Why Now

Invoicing is one of the most searched productivity tasks on the web, and it is growing fast. According to Google Keyword Planner data from October 2026, “invoice generator” is searched about 550,000 times a month, up 305% year over year. “Free invoice generator” adds another 110,000 monthly searches and “invoice maker” 49,500. Closer to home, “invoice template google docs” gets 18,100 searches a month and “google sheets invoice template” 8,100, which tells you where many of those people end up: copying a template into Docs or Sheets and filling it in by hand.

Two things drive that growth. More people bill for their own work than ever, as freelancers, contractors, creators and side businesses, and most of them do not want accounting software for three invoices a month. And AI assistants have raised expectations. If ChatGPT can draft a proposal from a sentence, typing the same information into twelve form fields feels like a step backwards.

The typical “free” generator gates the download behind an email address, limits the number of invoices, watermarks the PDF, or keeps your client list on its servers as the price of convenience. We wanted a tool that does the one job well, respects the data you type into it, and hands you off to a proper document editor when you need more than a PDF.

What the Free Invoice Generator Does

The generator lives at three addresses that lead to the same tool: gpt.space/tools/invoice-generator, gpt.space/tools/free-invoice-generator and gpt.space/tools/invoice-maker. It sits alongside the Markdown converters and the other free web tools at gpt.space/tools.

The form holds everything an invoice needs:

  • Your details: business name, address and contact information, which the browser remembers for next time.
  • Client details: who the invoice is for.
  • Line items: description, quantity and unit price, with as many rows as the job needs.
  • Tax rate: VAT, GST or sales tax as a percentage, applied to the subtotal.
  • Discount: a reduction applied before tax.
  • Currency: pick the one you bill in and the amounts format accordingly.

The preview updates as you type, so the invoice you see is the invoice you get. When it looks right, click download and the browser’s own Save as PDF dialog opens with a clean, print-ready document. There is no watermark, no “made with” footer and no quality tier.

Three details make it comfortable for repeat use:

  1. Nothing is uploaded. The invoice is built and rendered in your browser. Your name, your client’s address and your prices never leave your computer. There is no server to breach and no account to delete.
  2. Invoice numbers increment on their own. The tool remembers the last number you used and proposes the next one, so you stop guessing whether you are on 0047 or 0048.
  3. No sign-up. The page works the first time you open it, with no email address, no trial and no credit card.

Your first invoice in five steps

  1. Open gpt.space/tools/invoice-generator.
  2. Fill in your business details once. The browser keeps them for the next invoice.
  3. Add the client, line items, tax rate, discount and currency, or switch to AI mode and describe the job in a sentence.
  4. Check the live preview. The invoice number is already set to the next one in your sequence.
  5. Click download and save the PDF through the browser’s Save as PDF dialog.

AI Mode: Describe the Job, Get the Invoice

The part we are most pleased with is the AI mode. Instead of filling in the form field by field, you describe the work in one sentence:

3 days of design work for Acme at $600/day, 20% VAT

The generator reads that sentence and fills in the line items, the tax rate and the due date. Quantity 3, unit price 600, description “design work”, client Acme, 20% VAT applied, and the amounts totalled in the preview. You check the result, adjust anything that needs adjusting, and download the PDF. The sentence can be as plain as you like.

This is the same idea behind the rest of GPT Workspace: say what you want in ordinary language and let the assistant do the typing. In Google Docs that means drafting a contract from a prompt. In Google Sheets it means a formula that cleans up a column of client names. In the invoice generator it means skipping the form on days when you already know what the invoice should say.

Two practical notes on AI mode:

  • It fills the form, it does not replace it. Every value it enters appears in an editable field, so nothing goes onto the PDF without you seeing it.
  • Your business details come from what the browser already remembers, so the sentence only needs the parts that change: who, what, how much and what tax.

Who the Invoice Generator Is For

We built the tool for people who invoice often enough to be annoyed by the chore and not often enough to want accounting software.

  • Freelancers and contractors: designers, developers, writers and photographers who bill per day, per hour or per deliverable and want the PDF out the door the moment the work is approved.
  • Consultants and coaches: a handful of clients, recurring sessions, and invoice numbers that need to stay in sequence across months.
  • Small businesses and side projects: a shop, a studio or a service business that sends a few invoices a week and does not want a client list sitting in a third party’s database.
  • Google Workspace users with a template habit: everyone searching for “invoice template google docs” or “google sheets invoice template”. If you copy a Doc each month and fix the numbers by hand, the generator does the same job without the copy step and without the arithmetic.

What it is not: an accounting system. It does not track payments, send reminders or reconcile bank feeds. If you need those, you need bookkeeping software, and the PDF this tool produces will import into any of them.

From Invoice to Google Docs and Sheets

An invoice is rarely the only document a job produces. Before it there is a quote or a proposal. Around it there is a contract and a status email. After it there is a spreadsheet of what was billed, what was paid and what is overdue. That is why the next steps after you download the PDF point to the GPT Workspace extension for Google Docs and Sheets.

Drafting the documents around the invoice in Google Docs

With GPT Workspace installed, an AI sidebar opens inside Google Docs. Ask it to draft a proposal for the job you just invoiced, turn the line items into a scope of work, write the cover email, or tighten the payment terms in your contract. It edits the document in place rather than in a separate chat window you copy from. Our guide to ChatGPT for Google Docs covers the writing side in detail.

Tracking invoices with GPT formulas in Google Sheets

Most freelancers keep their invoice log in a spreadsheet. The extension adds GPT formulas you type into a cell like any other function. Use them to standardise client names, classify expenses, draft a polite reminder from a row that is 30 days overdue, or summarise a quarter of invoices into a sentence for your accountant. Our article on AI in Google Sheets is the place to start.

One extension for the whole workflow

The invoice generator, the Markdown converters we launched this week and the AI sidebar all come from the same place, and they fit together: convert an AI-written proposal into a Google Doc, polish it with the sidebar, invoice the work with the generator, and log it in Sheets. The complete GPT Workspace guide walks through every surface the extension covers, and if you are comparing options, see our roundup of the best ChatGPT Chrome extensions for Google Workspace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the invoice generator really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no trial, no invoice limit and no watermark on the PDF. The tool at gpt.space/tools/invoice-generator is free to use as often as you like, and the GPT Workspace Chrome extension it points to afterwards has a free plan as well.
Where is my invoice data stored?
In your browser, on your own computer. Your business details, the last invoice number and the invoice you are working on stay local so the next one is prefilled. Nothing is uploaded to a server and there is no account holding a copy of your client list. Clearing your browser data for gpt.space removes it.
How does the AI mode work?
You type one sentence describing the job, for example "3 days of design work for Acme at $600/day, 20% VAT". The generator fills in the line items, the tax rate and the due date from that sentence. Every value lands in an editable field, so you review it in the live preview before downloading the PDF.
Can I use it instead of a Google Docs or Google Sheets invoice template?
For producing the invoice itself, yes. It does what a Docs or Sheets template does without copying a file, retyping the number or calculating the tax by hand, and the result is a clean PDF. For the documents around the invoice, such as proposals, contracts and your invoice log, the GPT Workspace extension brings an AI sidebar into Google Docs and GPT formulas into Google Sheets.

Conclusion

A free invoice generator should be exactly that: free, fast, private and good enough that you never go back to the Doc you copied last month. The one at gpt.space/tools/invoice-generator takes the details, the line items, the tax and the discount, shows you the invoice as you type, numbers it for you and gives you a clean PDF with nothing uploaded and nothing to sign up for. On a busy day, one sentence in AI mode does the typing.

It is the newest of the free tools at gpt.space/tools, after the Markdown converters earlier this week, and it follows the same rules as the rest. We will keep adding small, well made tools for the document chores around Google Workspace, and keep the path from each of them into Docs and Sheets short. When the invoice is sent and the proposal, the contract and the spreadsheet are waiting, install GPT Workspace from the Chrome Web Store and bring the same one-sentence workflow into Google Docs and Google Sheets.
