Markdown Converters for Google Workspace: PDF, Word, Docs and Viewer
On this page

Markdown used to be a format for developers and note takers. In 2026 it is the format that every AI assistant speaks: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answer in Markdown, read Markdown better than anything else, and leave you holding a .md file that Google Docs, your manager and your printer do not quite know what to do with. The missing piece is a good Markdown converter, and until recently the options were a command line tool, an upload-and-wait website, or a browser extension that could view a file but not do anything with it.

Today GPT Workspace, our AI assistant for Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Gmail, releases a set of free Markdown converters for Google Workspace: six web tools at gpt.space/tools, a Markdown viewer inside the Chrome extension, and two-way conversion between Markdown and Google Docs. This article is a tour of what shipped and how each tool compares with CloudConvert, Pandoc and the standalone viewer extensions.

Why Markdown Conversion Is Booming in 2026

The numbers behind this launch surprised us. Searches for “pdf to markdown” grew more than 300% in a single year, and “markdown to pdf” is now searched about 165,000 times a month. Add Word to Markdown, Markdown to Google Docs, Markdown readers and viewers, and the whole cluster is one of the fastest growing productivity queries we track.

The reason is the way people work with large language models:

  • Input: a PDF or a Word file pasted into ChatGPT or Claude loses its structure or eats the context window with page headers, footers and page numbers. Clean Markdown keeps headings, lists and tables and takes a fraction of the tokens.
  • Output: every assistant replies in Markdown. Copy that reply into Google Docs and, unless a hidden preference is on, you get literal ## and ** characters instead of a formatted document.
  • Storage: notes apps, Obsidian vaults, GitHub repositories and the memory files of coding agents are all plain .md. Google added native .md opening in Drive and Docs in October 2026, but there is still no built in path from a Markdown file to a PDF, a Word document or a formatted Doc with tables and code intact.

The Chrome Web Store has Markdown viewer extensions and AI writing extensions, but nothing that connects the two sides of the workflow inside Google Workspace. That gap is what these tools fill.

The Six Free Markdown Tools at gpt.space/tools

Every tool runs in your browser. The file you drop is parsed with JavaScript on your own machine, nothing is uploaded to a server, there is no queue, no account and no file size quota beyond what your computer can handle.

Each page shows a live preview before you download anything, and all six share the same Markdown engine, so a table that converts correctly to Word converts the same way to PDF and to Google Docs.

Markdown to Google Docs, PDF and Word

This is the direction most people need after a session with an AI assistant: Markdown in, a document that other people can open out.

Markdown to Google Docs

Paste the Markdown, give the document a title, and click Open in Google Docs. Headings become real Docs headings that show up in the outline, nested lists keep their levels, pipe tables become Docs tables, fenced code becomes a shaded monospace block, links stay clickable and bold, italic and strikethrough survive. The Doc is created in a demo account so that nobody has to sign in to try it, and File > Make a copy puts it in your own Drive. Demo files are deleted after 24 hours. If you would rather not go through a demo Doc, the same page offers a .docx download that Google Docs opens natively, and the Chrome extension, covered further down, creates the Doc directly in your own Drive.

Markdown to PDF

The PDF converter renders the Markdown with a print stylesheet and uses the browser’s own print engine, the only way to produce a PDF with selectable text, working links and correct page breaks without sending the file anywhere. Pick A4 or Letter, click Download PDF, and the save dialog opens with the file name already set. Headings stay with the paragraph that follows them and tables do not split in the middle of a row.

Markdown to Word

The Word converter builds a real .docx with named styles: Heading 1 to 6, bulleted and numbered lists, tables with a shaded header row, bold, italic, links and code. Because the styles are real Word styles rather than direct formatting, the document behaves properly afterwards: the navigation pane works, a template can restyle it, and Google Docs, Word and LibreOffice all open it the same way.

The other direction matters just as much. When you want an assistant to summarise a report, extract the figures from a contract or rewrite a specification, the quality of the answer depends on the quality of the text it reads.

PDF to Markdown

Drop a PDF and the tool reads its text layer page by page, with a progress bar for long documents. Lines are grouped into paragraphs, headings are detected from font size and weight, bullets become list items, and columns of aligned text become pipe tables. The result appears in an editable box next to a rendered preview, ready to copy or download.

The option that makes the difference for AI work is LLM-ready mode, switched on by default. It strips the running headers and footers that repeat on most pages, removes page numbers, rejoins words that were hyphenated across a line break, and drops the page markers. A 40-page PDF loses thousands of tokens of noise and the model gets a document that reads like it was written in Markdown in the first place. Turn the option off when you need to cite page numbers.

Two honest limits. A scanned PDF has no text layer, so the tool tells you that instead of returning an empty file, and you need OCR first. Multi-column layouts and tables with merged cells convert less cleanly than single-column text, so check those sections in the preview before you paste them anywhere important. For a report that is too long to paste, the assistant can also read the file directly from Drive, as our guide to summarising PDFs with AI shows.

Word to Markdown

Drop a .docx and the converter maps Word styles to Markdown: heading styles to # levels, list paragraphs to - and 1., tables to pipe tables, bold and italic runs to ** and _, hyperlinks to [text](url). Legacy binary .doc files are rejected with a hint to save them as .docx first.

The Chrome Markdown Viewer

The web tools cover the occasional conversion. The Chrome extension covers the files you meet all day.

Install GPT Workspace and any .md or .markdown page is one right-click away from a rendered view. Right-click the link or the page and choose Open in Markdown viewer. That works for raw files on GitHub and Gist and for README files on internal servers.

Nothing opens in the viewer on its own, so links keep loading the way Chrome shows them. For files on your disk, right-click the extension icon, choose Markdown tools, and drag the file onto the viewer, or paste text into it. The file picker in the same viewer needs Allow access to file URLs ticked for the extension in chrome://extensions, drag and drop does not.

The viewer renders:

  • A table of contents built from the headings, with scroll tracking.
  • Mermaid diagrams: flowcharts, sequence diagrams and Gantt charts drawn from fenced mermaid blocks.
  • Math: inline and display LaTeX.
  • Syntax highlighted code blocks in the GitHub colour scheme.
  • Task lists, tables, footnotes, images and the rest of GitHub-flavoured Markdown.
  • A light or dark theme that follows your system or your choice.

The toolbar above the document has the actions a viewer-only extension does not have:

  • Open in Google Docs: signed in, the extension creates a Google Doc in your own Drive from the file and opens it. Not signed in, it converts the file to rich text, places it on your clipboard and opens a new Doc with a note telling you to press Ctrl+V or Cmd+V.
  • Export to PDF: opens the print dialog with the file name as the PDF title and a print stylesheet that hides the toolbar and keeps headings with their text.
  • Copy HTML, Download .md and Download .html for everything else.

The same extension adds two conversions inside Google Docs itself. Paste Markdown and it is formatted: copy a reply from ChatGPT or Claude as plain text, press Ctrl+V in a Doc, and headings, lists, tables, code blocks and links appear formatted, with a small toast offering Undo or Turn off. Google’s own paste-from-Markdown preference handles the basics but drops tables and code, which is exactly what AI replies are full of. In the other direction, the Markdown menu in the GPT Workspace bar at the bottom of a Doc offers Copy document as Markdown, Download .md and Copy selection as Markdown. If you already use the extension for AI writing in Google Docs, these appear next to the features you know.

PDF and Word conversion lives in the viewer too. Drop a .pdf or .docx onto it, or right-click a PDF tab and choose Convert to Markdown, and the result opens as a normal Markdown document, so Open in Google Docs, Export to PDF and the downloads all work on it.

How They Compare With CloudConvert, Pandoc and Viewer Extensions

There is no shortage of ways to convert Markdown. Here is where the GPT Workspace tools sit, as fairly as we can put it.

Upload based converters such as CloudConvert handle hundreds of formats, which is their strength. The trade-off is that your document leaves your computer, free tiers meter conversions, and there is no Google Docs output. For a confidential contract or an internal report, a converter that never uploads is the safer default.

Pandoc is the gold standard for people who live in a terminal: precise, scriptable, and able to convert between dozens of markup formats. It also needs installing, a LaTeX distribution for good PDFs and command line comfort, and it does not read PDFs or talk to Google Docs. If you already have it set up, keep using it.

Standalone Markdown viewer extensions do one thing, and some of them do it beautifully. What they lack is a next step: once the file is rendered, there is no button to turn it into a Doc, a PDF or a prompt. GPT Workspace treats the rendered view as a starting point rather than the destination. For how it fits among AI extensions more broadly, see our comparison of ChatGPT Chrome extensions for Google Workspace.

Getting Started

  1. For a one-off conversion, open gpt.space/tools, pick the converter, and drop your file or paste your text. No account, no sign-in.
  2. For files you meet every day, install the GPT Workspace Chrome extension. The next .md link you meet opens in the viewer with a right-click, and the next Markdown reply you paste into Google Docs comes out formatted.
  3. To pick local .md files from inside the viewer, go to chrome://extensions, open the GPT Workspace details and switch on Allow access to file URLs. Dragging a file onto the viewer works without it.
  4. Sign in with your Google account at gpt.space when you want Open in Google Docs to create documents in your own Drive, and when you want the AI features that come with the same extension. The complete GPT Workspace guide walks through those.

The paste conversion has a switch in the extension’s Settings, so it can be turned off and back on at any time. The viewer needs no switch, since it only opens when you ask for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Markdown converters free?
Yes. The six web tools at gpt.space/tools, the Markdown viewer, the paste conversion in Google Docs and the Docs to Markdown export are all free and use no AI credits. There is no file size quota beyond what your browser can process, and no daily limit on conversions.
Do I need a Google account?
Not for the web tools or the viewer. Markdown to PDF, Word and Markdown, PDF and Word to Markdown, and the rendered view all work without signing in. A Google account is only needed when you want Open in Google Docs to create the document directly in your own Drive. Without one, the web tool creates a demo Doc you can copy, and the extension puts the formatted text on your clipboard for a new Doc.
Does the conversion run in my browser or on a server?
In your browser. PDFs, Word files and Markdown are parsed and rendered by JavaScript on your own machine, and PDF export uses the browser's print engine. The one exception is Open in Google Docs, which has to send the converted document to Google to create the Doc. Nothing else leaves your computer.
Which Chrome extension do I install?
GPT Workspace, from the Chrome Web Store. It is one extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc that includes the Markdown viewer, the PDF and Word conversion, paste-to-format and Docs to Markdown export, along with the AI assistant for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Gmail and the dark mode. The install link at gpt.space takes you to the store listing.

Which Markdown Converter Should You Use?

If you convert a file once in a while, use the web tools at gpt.space/tools: ten seconds, no account. If your work involves AI assistants, GitHub or notes in Markdown and you live in Google Docs, the Chrome extension removes the converter step entirely: links render, pastes format, Docs export, and PDFs and Word files turn into clean Markdown for ChatGPT and Claude. Pandoc remains the right answer for scripted pipelines, and upload-based services for exotic formats.

Markdown is no longer a niche format. It is the common language between people and the models they work with. Install GPT Workspace, or start with a single conversion at gpt.space, and the gap between a .md file and a Google Workspace document closes.
